Aisha Buhari, Nigeria's first lady in waiting has tweeted her congratulatory message to her husband, President elect, Muhammadu Buhari, and also to those who made the victory possible.

 “I am so proud of my husband and the team who have worked hard to make this happen. Nigerians are aware now more than ever that the people have the power to sway the fate of a nation. We must see this as a triumphant show of democracy, a change for the better. I am excited for the future of this nation as We now have a mandate for Change.I too have watched with bated breath as the results have been announced. It has been a gripping day for democracy in Nigeria.”

Victory for Buhari marks the first time in Nigeria's history that an opposition party has democratically taken control of the country from the ruling party.

"A final tally of the results compiled by Reuters gave the sandal-wearing and ascetic Buhari 15.4 million votes against 13.3 million for Jonathan, a margin of victory that is likely to render any legal challenges irrelevant."
